Holly's Hello!
27 September 2012
Welcome to the irreverent musings that go on inside my brain. 'Tis a silly brain filled with all kinds of awesomey randomness that is just screaming to be shared.
You may be wondering why a Licensed Psychologist is writing a weekly column for a Science Fiction website. After all, I'm a doctor, not a journalist, dammit!
Well, ever since I was a wee lass, I have been fascinated by science in all of its forms. Yes, I was that kid. The kid who got a microscope and chemistry set for Christmas and then proceeded to do experiments on just about anything. The kid whose nose was always in a book, questioned everything, challenged others, and thrived on knowledge. The perpetual student, the learner, the thinker, the ponderer. You get the picture. The consumate nerd.
Unfortunately, my family was not into movies, and the main television in my house was owned by my grandmother whose favorite shows were Walker, Texas Ranger and her "stories". I knew way more about General Hospital than any normal child. Kind of fitting though, since normal was probably the last word that was ever used to describe me.
But, I digress. At age 15, I finally got my own television and a VCR (yes, back in the olden days before DVRs and Netflix) and began watching television late at night when I didn't have a book to read. Late-night television may not always have the best programming, but lucky for me, one of the channels re-ran episodes of The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. I was immediately hooked. Soon after, The X-Files aired and quickly became one of my favorite shows. I really really wanted to believe! And so it began.
Like most college freshmen, I had to take a writing course and being the science nerd that I was, I decided to take a class called "The Biology in Science Fiction". I instantly fell in love with the writing of Michael Crichton and read all of his books that I could get my hands on. I also started to read short-story collections, including my favorite (now out of print book), Microcosmic Tales. The Science Fiction seed continued to grow, but only recently have I really gotten the time to delve brain-first into the wide wondrous world of Science Fiction television, movies, and literature.
And so here I am, sharing my journey with you, the Gentle Reader. As I read and watch the classics and the not-so-classics, the good, the bad, and the ugly, I plan on sharing with you my thoughts, qualms, and quandries, as both a lover of Science Fiction and as a scientist. So sit back, relax, put your feet up, let me do the work, and enjoy the ride. But please, keep your hands and feet inside the spaceship at all times.
So, I'm pleased to meet you. And if anyone ever asks you: Doctor who wrote that column? You can correctly answer: Not Doctor Who, 'twas Doctor Holly.
